President Biden has unveiled his selection of recipients for the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, a recognition awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to national security, world peace, or significant public or private endeavors.

The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, will honor 19 individuals, including prominent Democrats such as former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Secretary of State John F. Kerry, and Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina.

Among the awardees are major figures from various fields, including civil rights, sports, entertainment, and space exploration. Notable recipients include civil rights activist Clarence B. Jones, educator Opal Lee, and Judy Shepard, founder of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

The list also features cultural icons like Michelle Yeoh and Phil Donahue, as well as trailblazing figures from the space field such as astronaut Ellen Ochoa and astronomer Jane Rigby.

Additionally, the ceremony will pay tribute to posthumous recipients like civil rights leader Medgar Evers, Olympic gold medalist Jim Thorpe, and former Senator Frank R. Lautenberg.

The event will serve as an opportunity for President Biden to express gratitude to key allies who have supported him throughout his career, including Pelosi, Kerry, and Clyburn, whose endorsements played crucial roles in various political endeavors.

The inclusion of Elizabeth Dole, a prominent Republican figure, highlights bipartisanship in the selection process. Dole’s extensive record of leadership and service, spanning roles in multiple presidential administrations and the Senate, is recognized and celebrated.

The ceremony underscores the diverse contributions of individuals from different backgrounds and fields, reflecting the richness of American society and the values of leadership, service, and excellence.”
