Authorities in Ohio have issued a public health alert following the indictment of a woman who is HIV-positive. She is accused of engaging in sexual contact with over 200 individuals in various states.

The indictment, announced by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, comes after the woman received a positive HIV test result in 2022. Law enforcement and health officials are currently contacting individuals who may have had sexual contact with her, strongly encouraging them to get screened and seek treatment if needed.

The Sheriff’s Office made it clear in a statement that their outreach efforts are not meant to be punitive, but rather an essential public health measure. Individuals who are contacted will be referred to their local health departments for HIV screening and, if necessary, treatment.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out that symptoms of HIV can mimic those of the flu, appearing within two to four weeks of infection and lasting for several weeks. Nevertheless, certain instances might not exhibit any symptoms, highlighting the significance of testing to identify the virus.
