A group of American medical professionals are currently stuck in Gaza due to the increasing tensions, desperately seeking help from the US government to ensure their safe journey back home.

One of them is Dr. Ahlia Kattan, a skilled anesthesiologist and critical care specialist, who had been looking forward to reuniting with her family in California by now. Instead, she is stuck at Gaza’s European Hospital, unable to keep her promise to her children because of the closure of Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt after Israeli military operations in Rafah.

Dr. Kattan, along with 21 other American physicians, travelled to Gaza with the support of FAJR Scientific, a US-based nonprofit organisation. Their objective was to deliver essential medical assistance to the area. Unfortunately, the border closure has left them stuck in Gaza, with no definite timeline for their departure.

Despite the World Health Organization’s (WHO) efforts, negotiations for their safe exit have not been successful. Now, FAJR Scientific is urging the US government to step in and organise their safe departure from the conflict zone.

Dr. Kattan, along with her husband who is also a physician, shares the emotional distress of being away from their children while dealing with the ongoing crisis that affects the lives of many.

Despite the dangers they faced on their mission, they never expected to find themselves stuck in Gaza, torn between their longing to go back home and their dedication to providing medical aid to those in need.

While awaiting a resolution, Dr. Kattan and her colleagues persist in their efforts at the European Hospital, diligently documenting the challenging conditions they encounter and emphasising the critical requirement for medical supplies.

Their request for help highlights the challenging circumstances that foreign aid workers in Gaza are currently facing, emphasising the significance of diplomatic intervention to guarantee their safe journey back to their countries.
