Tragically, Juan Luis Gomez Ramirez, a dedicated middle school teacher and basketball coach from Puebla, Mexico, met a devastating fate during a violent incident while on a family trip to Los Angeles.

Winston Rivera, the alleged assailant, is being charged with murder by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He is accused of fatally shooting Gomez Ramirez aboard a Metro bus in Commerce. A devastating act has left behind a shattered widow named Sarahi Varela and their 2-year-old son, Elliot.

Varela, deeply affected by overwhelming sorrow, warmly recalled Gomez Ramirez as a caring parent and committed teacher. The family, visiting Los Angeles on a tourist visa to see their relatives, had planned to go back to Mexico in July.

The tragic incident took place as Gomez Ramirez was on his way home from his part-time job, abruptly cutting short what was meant to be a happy family outing. Mario Acosta Jr., representing the family, shared their intention to apply for a U Visa, which provides assistance to victims of certain crimes during difficult circumstances.

The passing of Juan Luis Gomez Ramirez serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of senseless violence on the lives of innocent individuals and communities.
