Nestled on the outskirts of the Hoopa Valley Reservation in Humboldt County, California, lies Tish Tang Campground—a serene haven offering breathtaking views and direct access to the Trinity River. Owned and operated by the Hoopa Valley Tribe, this hidden gem beckons nature enthusiasts seeking solace amidst picturesque landscapes.

During my recent excursion to Tish Tang, I was captivated by its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. Alongside the Trinity River, my partner and I were treated to unforgettable moments, from witnessing a mesmerizing flock of western sandpipers soaring overhead to spotting a majestic bald eagle during an evening stroll along the riverbanks.

Despite its secluded location, Tish Tang’s charm extends beyond its scenic vistas. While lounging by the river, we were surprised by the appearance of a Western pond turtle, venturing into the waters—an encounter that epitomized the campground’s enchanting allure.

Originally part of the Hoopa Tribe’s ancestral land, Tish Tang boasts a rich history. Once claimed by white settlers and later managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the campground returned to tribal ownership in 2000, following years of advocacy by the Hupa people. Today, it stands as a testament to resilience and cultural preservation, offering a unique opportunity for camping on tribal land.

The journey to reclaim Tish Tang was not without its challenges. Once overrun by poison oak, the campground underwent a remarkable transformation, thanks to the dedication of camp host Marion McCovey and his immunity to the toxic plant. McCovey’s efforts, coupled with restoration initiatives, revitalized the campground, allowing native flora to flourish once more.

In recent years, Tish Tang has received significant investment, including funding from a Caltrans-led initiative. Modern amenities, such as restroom facilities and a stunning mural adorning the campground’s entrance, have enhanced the visitor experience. The addition of a sauna, nestled amidst verdant foliage, promises relaxation and rejuvenation amidst nature’s embrace.

Beyond its natural beauty, Tish Tang embodies a spirit of community and cultural preservation. Serving as a venue for sharing indigenous traditions, the campground hosts language learning initiatives and cultural activities for tribal youth, preserving heritage for future generations.

As we departed Tish Tang, the memories we forged lingered, leaving us eager to return to this hidden oasis in the heart of Northern California. With promises of riverside vistas, summer swims in the Trinity, and the allure of the new sauna, Tish Tang beckons adventurers to explore its tranquil landscapes and embrace the serenity of nature.
