In a startling turn of events, 20-year-old Edward Kang stands accused of flying from Newark, New Jersey, to Jacksonville, Florida, allegedly to commit murder following a dispute in an online fantasy game. Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper described the incident as perplexing, remarking, “There are moments that just leave you wondering, ‘What was he thinking?'”
According to Sheriff Leeper, Kang attacked the victim with a hammer while the victim was taking a break from gaming. The victim’s stepfather intervened upon hearing cries for help, successfully disarming Kang and restraining him until law enforcement arrived.
Responding to a 911 call, deputies discovered significant blood at the scene in the home’s entryway and the victim’s bedroom. Kang was formally charged with second-degree attempted murder and attempted burglary on Monday.
Investigations revealed that Kang and the victim knew each other solely through the online game ArcheAge. Kang misled his family, claiming he was visiting a friend, before purchasing a hammer and other items upon arrival in Jacksonville. He then allegedly entered the victim’s home through an unlocked door.
Although the victim suffered severe head injuries, medical professionals anticipate a full recovery. Kang, however, has not cooperated with the investigation, justifying his actions by labeling the victim as a “negative influence online.
