With the rare winter storm warning affecting southeast Georgia and inland northeast Florida, experts are advising drivers to take extra precautions on the roadways due to icy conditions. The First Alert Weather Team predicts a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, particularly impacting southeast Georgia, and cold rain that may transition into sleet and freezing rain in Florida on Wednesday.

Jim Reynolds, General Manager of Tom Bush Volkswagen, urges drivers to slow down, avoid heavy throttle or brake use, and be gentle on the gas and brakes to prevent slides or spins on the icy roads. If hydroplaning occurs, Reynolds advises turning into the slide and avoiding slamming on the brakes, as modern cars with stability control may assist in regaining control.

The danger of black ice, which is invisible and especially treacherous, is highlighted, particularly on bridges and overpasses, which are more susceptible to icing. The Florida Department of Transportation is closely monitoring conditions, especially on elevated roadways.

Reynolds also emphasizes the importance of increasing the distance between cars, as stopping distances will be longer. Before driving, it’s advised to prep your car by allowing it to warm up, removing ice from windows, checking wipers, and inspecting tire pressure. Drivers can also salt driveways for better traction and keep kitty litter on hand for added grip.

In these conditions, safety is paramount, so driving cautiously and preparing your vehicle in advance can help prevent accidents.
