Vivek Ramaswamy is set to launch his campaign for Ohio governor next week, stepping away from his role in the Trump administration’s efforts to cut government spending. He had been appointed by President Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency DOGE a group tasked with advising the White House on strategies to reduce federal spending alongside Elon Musk.
However, Ramaswamy’s announcement of his gubernatorial run comes after he was informed that DOGE employees are prohibited from running for office.
Ramaswamy, who has a warm and cordial relationship with Trump and Musk, received their support for his gubernatorial bid. He had long been expected to run for governor in 2026, following the term limits of current Governor Mike DeWine.
Ramaswamy, a suburban Cincinnati native, had previously been a potential candidate for the Ohio Senate seat but ultimately chose the governor’s race.
Despite some recent controversies over his defense of technology companies hiring foreign workers via H-1B visas, Ramaswamy remains a prominent figure in Ohio politics.
With Trump’s endorsement, he is considered a strong contender in the GOP primary, although Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Treasurer Robert Sprague are also vying for the position.
