As the Thanksgiving travel rush begins, Virginia State Police are reminding drivers to prioritize safety, urging them to buckle up and follow speed limits. Last year, half of the 11 fatalities during the Thanksgiving week involved individuals not wearing seat belts.

This year’s safety campaign aligns with the Click It or Ticket initiative and MADD’s winter DUI-prevention effort, both designed to reduce traffic fatalities by encouraging seatbelt use and discouraging impaired driving.

Virginia State Police will increase patrols as part of Operation C.A.R.E. Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) from 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1. Last year, police issued over 4,500 speeding tickets, made 89 DUI arrests, and cited 427 seatbelt violations.

While traffic fatalities in Virginia have slightly decreased this year 745 compared to 752 in 2023, state police remain committed to keeping the roads safer during the Thanksgiving holiday.
