A high-speed chase in Johnson County, Arkansas, ended tragically on Tuesday, December 24, when the suspect, a 33-year-old man from Virginia, died from injuries.
The Arkansas State Police said that the chase began around 8:30 p.m. after a trooper attempted to stop the man for speeding at 98 miles per hour on Interstate 40 near mile marker 66. The suspect gave the officer false identification and then tried to escape. The trooper used a tactic to stop the vehicle near mile marker 61.
The suspect, driving a 2006 Honda Pilot, lost control and crashed into trees in a wooded area north of the interstate. He died from the injuries sustained in the crash.
Police found a loaded gun, drug paraphernalia, a taser, and nearly 5 ounces of cocaine in the SUV. The suspect also had a history of charges in Virginia, including fleeing from police and possession of a controlled substance.
ASP Colonel Mike Hagar said, Fleeing from law enforcement is reckless and has serious consequences. The incident is still under investigation, and the suspect’s body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for examination.
