A significant Pacific storm system is forecasted to impact Utah this weekend, bringing a mix of valley rain and substantial mountain snowfall, alongside colder temperatures. The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City reports that the storm will begin moving into the state as a mid-level trough enters the Great Basin.
Initially, precipitation may be scattered due to weak convergence; however, a more organized band of rain and snow is expected to form as the system digs southeast into northern Utah tonight.
By Sunday morning, snowfall accumulation in higher elevations is predicted to reach 5 to 10 inches, with some areas potentially exceeding these totals due to orographic effects. A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded for the higher terrain north of Interstate 80, where snow levels will drop from above 6,000 feet to near 5,000 feet.
In the valleys along the I-15 corridor, rain is anticipated throughout the storm event, though snow levels may lower toward the end of the precipitation period. As the system moves out, gusty winds may develop in parts of Washington County, which could lead to wind headlines later in the weekend. Following a brief respite on Monday, another storm is expected to cross the state from Tuesday into Wednesday.
