Gov. Spencer Cox swore in over 140 new law enforcement officers in Utah on Monday, marking the establishment of the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.

Created by the Utah Legislature in 2024, the division consolidates multiple agencies to improve law enforcement efforts in Utah’s back country and waterways, a move recommended in four previous audits.

Gov. Cox emphasized the importance of protecting Utah’s natural resources for future generations and acknowledged the personal sacrifices of officers and their families.

Joel Ferry, executive director of the Department of Natural Resources, highlighted the challenging nature of the work, noting that it requires resilience and dedication.

Law Enforcement Director Todd Royce stressed that the new division builds upon the efforts of past officers, opening a new chapter in the state’s law enforcement history.
