The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service FSIS has issued a public health alert for frozen, ready-to-eat pork mortadella products.
These items were imported by Ecuatorianita Imports & Exports, LLC and might have been brought into the U.S. illegally from Ecuador, a country not allowed to export meat products to the U.S.
The affected products are 1-pound vacuum-sealed packages labeled Mortadela ESPECIAL BOLOGNIA.
They do not have the USDA inspection mark or establishment number. These products were sent to stores and distributors in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
FSIS is continuing to investigate and might find more affected products. The alert was issued after FSIS discovered the mortadella products without the USDA inspection mark during a warehouse inspection.
So far, no one has reported any health issues from eating these products. However, FSIS advises consumers who have purchased them to throw them away or return them to the store.
This is part of ongoing efforts by FSIS to address illegally imported food. Earlier in November, a similar alert was issued for beef tallow products from Mexico, and in October, it was for meat products from Myanmar.
