Russian forces launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine using 87 Shahed drones and four types of missiles, Ukrainian officials said Sunday.

In the Kharkiv region, a 49-year-old man was killed when a drone struck his car, according to regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov. In the city of Odesa, a gas pipeline was damaged, and a warehouse caught fire, officials added.

Ukraine’s air force reported that its air defenses managed to shoot down 56 of the 87 drones, along with two missiles, across 14 regions, including the capital, Kyiv. Additionally, 25 drones disappeared from radar, likely due to anti-aircraft missile defenses.

This wave of attacks follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s announcement that he will unveil his “victory plan” at the upcoming October 12 meeting of the Ramstein group, which coordinates arms supplies to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy presented the plan to U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington last week. While the details have not been made public, it reportedly includes Ukraine’s bid to join NATO and the request for long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia.

In a Sunday statement, Zelenskyy praised Ukraine’s troops, saying they are preparing for the next Ramstein meeting. He emphasized the need for more weapons to hasten the war’s end. We will keep convincing our partners that our drones alone are not enough. More decisive steps are needed, he posted on social media.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it had shot down four Ukrainian drones over the Kursk, Voronezh, and Belgorod regions.
