The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a reward of up to $7,000 for information leading to the capture of 37-year-old John Matthew Nigh, who escaped from the Craven County Detention Facility in North Carolina.
The search for Nigh has now been ongoing for nearly two weeks. Authorities have described him as armed and dangerous, with an extensive criminal history, including attempted murder of law enforcement and various drug and weapon charges.
Nigh managed to escape on January 26, 2025, when he was discovered missing from his cell. Two inmates helped him remove ceiling grating, and he exited through a ventilation housing after entering a utility chase.
The cellmates then concealed his absence by stuffing a mattress to make it appear that he was still in his cell. Law enforcement authorities warn that Nigh is known to carry weapons and should be considered dangerous.
He is described as being 6’2″, weighing 190 lbs, with tattoos reading JMN on his upper left arm, a cross on his upper right arm, “LIFE” on his left leg, and “TRIBAL” on his right leg.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call 1-877-WANTED2 or visit the U.S. Marshals website to submit a tip.
This manhunt remains a priority for law enforcement, and Nigh is to be considered extremely dangerous.
