BOSTON — A Massachusetts State Police trooper trainee was seriously injured during a boxing exercise on Thursday, according to sources.

The trainee was knocked out for almost 10 minutes after a head injury and was taken to a Worcester hospital in critical condition.

Boxing is part of the physical training at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree, where recruits spar in a real boxing ring.

The academy’s training program lasts 25 weeks and includes 90 different courses. The current class, known as the 90th RTT, began in April.

WBZ contacted the Massachusetts State Police and the union for a comment but has not received a response yet.
