In the sunshine state of Florida, renowned for its stunning beaches and lively nightlife, a new trend is making waves. Miami-Dade County, boasting a population of over 2 million, has taken the lead in cannabis consumption within the state.

Overview of the U.S. Cannabis Industry

Despite facing setbacks in 2022, the U.S. legal cannabis sector remains promising. According to the Brightfield Group, a leading cannabis research firm, the industry is expected to generate an annual revenue of $31.8 billion by the end of 2023, with potential growth reaching $50.7 billion by 2028. This growth is primarily attributed to the increasing legalization and acceptance of cannabis for medicinal purposes¹.

Interestingly, the first two months of 2023 witnessed three states initiating cannabis sales: two for adult use (Connecticut and Maryland) and one for medicinal use (Mississippi).

Challenges Facing the Cannabis Industry

Federal illegality poses a significant challenge to the American cannabis industry, leading to increased operational costs for cannabis businesses. Due to the disparity between federal and state laws, these companies struggle to access traditional banking services or loans. The absence of bankruptcy protection and high insurance costs further complicates their situation.

The federal tax code treats these companies as illegal drug traffickers, imposing a substantial tax burden. Additionally, the prohibition of interstate commerce requires the establishment of separate farms, factories, and stores in each state of operation, each adhering to its unique regulatory framework.

The balance between supply and demand has resulted in a significant price drop. Legal retailers face mounting competition from the black market, compelling them to maintain lower prices¹. In the third quarter of 2022, the retail price of a gram of marijuana decreased by 13% to $9.43 from the previous year’s $10.83, marking the sharpest decline in a single year.

Miami-Dade County: Florida’s Cannabis Hub

In Florida, Miami-Dade County claims the title for the highest marijuana consumption. With numerous medical marijuana shops scattered across the county, home to more than 2 million residents, the high consumption rate can be attributed to the county’s large population, the accessibility of medical marijuana shops, and the increasing acceptance of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use.

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve and expand, it will be intriguing to observe how consumption trends change and the impact this will have on the economy and society at large. For now, Miami-Dade County proudly holds the designation for the highest weed consumption in the state of Florida.
