According to a consulting firm called Election Data Services, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Idaho are expected to gain House seats after the 2030 census.
The firm said that Texas and Florida would each gain two seats, while Arizona and Idaho would each gain one. This is based on population estimates for 2024 from the U.S. Census Bureau.
On the other hand, California would lose two seats, and Illinois, Minnesota, New York, and Oregon would each lose one seat if the changes were made today.
The loss of seats in big states like California and New York could impact the Democratic Party, as these states are usually considered Democratic strongholds and have played a big role in recent victories.
The increase in seats for states like Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Idaho could benefit the Republican Party, which currently holds a narrow majority in the House. At the start of next year, the House will be nearly evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, with Republicans having a slight lead of 217 to 215.
In a recent interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson R-La. spoke confidently about handling the challenges of a slim Republican majority, saying that Republicans are excited and ready to push their agenda aggressively.
