Three months after Hurricane Helene caused destruction in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, groups in the Tennessee Valley are still sending help.
Johnny Maxwell, the pastor of Nature Trail Church in Decatur, organized a meeting with church leaders from around North Alabama to discuss how to keep supporting relief efforts as winter approaches in North Carolina.
Maxwell regularly takes supplies to North Carolina, and he says the biggest need right now is propane. Many people are still living in tents and campers, using propane to keep warm.
Maxwell has delivered hundreds of propane canisters, along with heaters and special hose adapters for the heaters. He wants to make sure people don’t forget the ongoing struggles in North Carolina.
Maxwell plans to keep helping with heating supplies through the winter, and later focus on rebuilding homes and infrastructure.
He emphasizes that it’s important to think about what people would do if they lost everything—no home, money, or identity. His goal is to help people get back on their feet.
