The Tennessee Senate has passed a resolution to form a joint committee that will consider the removal of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy from office. Sponsored by State Senator Brent Taylor (R-Memphis), the resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 26, now moves to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Taylor, who has clashed with Mulroy for months, accuses the DA of being “soft on crime” and believes he has become incompetent in his role.
Taylor argues that Mulroy’s leadership has led to unsafe communities, despite Mulroy citing lower crime rates since his tenure. The effort to oust Mulroy, if successful, would be historic as no Tennessee District Attorney has ever been removed from office in this manner. Mulroy, however, remains confident that the necessary two-thirds majority in both the State House and Senate will not be achieved. He points to the city’s record crime rates in 2023 as a point of contention in the ongoing debate.
