Flu cases are surging in Tennessee, with Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Medical Intensive Care Unit reporting a nearly doubled number of flu patients since last week.

Dr. Todd Rice, director of VUMC’s ICU, says this is the highest number of severe flu cases he’s seen since the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were more cautious.

Most ICU patients have underlying health conditions, but even healthy individuals can suffer from severe flu. Dr. Rice urges everyone, especially younger, healthy individuals, to take precautions and get vaccinated, as it’s not too late for the vaccine to provide some protection.

He also recommends seeing a doctor early for treatment if flu symptoms develop, as prompt care can help reduce illness severity.
