The Flatiron NoMad Partnership has announced the temporary shutdown of the portals connecting New York City and Dublin. The closure began on Tuesday at 5 p.m. New York time/10 p.m. Dublin time and is expected to last for a few days, with services resuming “by the end of this week.”
The portals, which have been operational since spring and are scheduled to run through fall of this year, were established by Portals.org.
This organization, led by Lithuanian artist, author, and entrepreneur Benediktas Gylys, previously installed portals in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland, in May 2021. While Gylys initially funded the project, local groups have also contributed to the Portal installations.
The purpose of these portals is to create a unique, immersive experience that allows individuals in different parts of the world to interact as if they were in the same location.
The closure of the NYC-Dublin portals is temporary, and they are expected to resume operations soon, providing continued opportunities for connection and collaboration between people across continents.
