A major brush fire in southwest Suffolk, Virginia, burned 30 to 50 acres on Thursday, December 5, before being brought under control by over 70 firefighters, according to Fire Chief Mike Barakey.
The fire, which broke out in the Holy Neck area near Pineview Road, Vicksburg Road, and Bott Lane, was reported around 12:25 p.m. Crews worked quickly to contain the flames, which were fueled by strong winds, making the task more difficult. By 4 p.m., the fire was about 90% contained, and by 5:57 p.m., it was declared fully under control.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no homes or buildings were damaged. Although nearby roads, including Pineview, Vicksburg, and Bott, remained closed into the evening, no evacuations were necessary.
A fire watch will continue overnight to ensure the fire doesn’t reignite. The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause, but no determination had been made as of Thursday afternoon.
Earlier that day, the city had already implemented burning restrictions.
This incident highlights the importance of caution during high-risk weather conditions, especially when burning restrictions are in effect.
