The Stewarts Creek High School band from Rutherford County has earned a prestigious honor as the sole representative of Tennessee in the 60th Presidential Inaugural Parade on January 20th. Band Director Michael Chester expressed the significance of the opportunity, calling it a life-changing experience for the 160 students involved, who will not only represent their school and community of Smyrna but also the entire state of Tennessee.
This remarkable chance came after submitting a compelling application, including a highlight reel and letters of support from state and local leaders.
The band members, including students Katie Sparks and Lily Agee, are thrilled about the honor and are determined to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In order to cover the expenses of the trip, the school is working to raise $120,000. So far, they have raised approximately $55,000, with an online fundraising campaign allowing the community to support their journey.
The band plans to perform My Country, Tis of Thee and You’re a Grand Old Flag during the historic event. Despite the pressure of performing on such a large stage, student Jordan Rogers emphasized the importance of preparation and unity as they get ready to represent Tennessee in front of the nation.
The Stewarts Creek band has previously performed at notable events, including the Pearl Harbor Memorial, the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade, and the Lincoln Memorial. However, the presidential inauguration parade marks their most prestigious performance to date.
