Los Angeles(Thechieftainspear) – As spring break approaches, federal officials are reminding U.S. travelers to prioritize safety while vacationing overseas. Both the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office and the U.S. State Department have issued advisories to help travelers stay vigilant and prepared.

“Spring break offers a chance to unwind, but travelers should remain aware of potential risks,” said Akil Davis, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office. “Stay alert, take precautions, and know where to find the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate if assistance is needed.”

The FBI advises travelers to stay in groups when venturing out at night, use only licensed transportation services, and be cautious when interacting with strangers who may seek personal information or attempt scams. They also recommend keeping family members informed of travel plans and reporting any suspicious activity.

The State Department, meanwhile, urges travelers to review travel advisories before departure, particularly for destinations with heightened safety concerns. A Level 4 advisory indicates areas that should be avoided due to crime, civil unrest, or other security risks.

Other key safety recommendations include:

  • Check passport requirements: Some countries mandate that passports remain valid for at least six months after arrival.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP): This free service provides real-time travel alerts and helps the government contact citizens in emergencies.
  • Watch out for scams: Criminals often use social media, dating apps, or other tactics to target unsuspecting travelers.

Recently, the State Department issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Turks and Caicos, a Caribbean hotspot, citing concerns over crime and strict firearm laws that could result in jail time for those found carrying weapons or ammunition. A Level 2 advisory suggests visitors “exercise increased caution.”
