Workers at seven CVS pharmacies in Southern California, including four in Los Angeles and three in Orange County, have gone on strike demanding improved pay and health care, alongside protesting alleged bad-faith contract negotiations by the company.

The strike began Friday and is expected to continue until negotiations resume on Wednesday.

Union representatives have accused CVS of intimidating workers and obstructing their communication with union officials.

Despite the strike, the affected stores remain operational, staffed by managers and nonunion employees. Union members reported overwhelming support for the strike, with over 90% voting in favor.

CVS has expressed disappointment at the strike, stating they have made progress in negotiations and have reached tentative agreements to raise pay and enhance health insurance contributions.

However, many workers, including pharmacy technician Melissa Acosta, claim the company’s health care plan remains unaffordable, forcing them to seek state assistance.

With the flu season approaching, workers like Carlos Alfaro emphasize the strain of understaffing, as they manage increased patient calls for vaccinations while fulfilling regular pharmacy duties.

They are also advocating for improved store security measures in light of rising shoplifting incidents.
