Residents in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan may experience a sonic boom on Wednesday as the 180th Fighter Wing conducts a flight check in the region, according to an announcement by the unit.

The 180th has announced that functional flight checks will take place in the morning from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Residents in Toledo and Bowling Green may hear a sonic boom as these checks are conducted.

Usually, sonic booms happen at altitudes of approximately 30,000 feet. However, even at lower altitudes, residents may still hear the boom as the aircraft break the sound barrier, as explained by the 180th.

The purpose of these flight checks, as mentioned in the press release, is to verify the proper functioning of all systems in the aircraft after undergoing extensive maintenance.

As the 180th carries out these necessary flight checks, it is important for residents to be mindful of the potential for sonic booms in the vicinity.
