BANGOR, Maine WABI – Maine Democrats convened in Bangor on Friday to address what they describe as dark money election lies, focusing on the influx of out-of-state funding in state house races.

Outgoing Senate President Troy Jackson and Senator Joe Baldacci voiced their concerns over the alleged misinformation regarding Maine’s budget, particularly claims made by out-of-state Republicans that Democratic leadership has drained state funds. Both lawmakers contended that Maine’s budget is in strong condition, highlighting significant increases in funding for local education and revenue sharing.

Senator Baldacci noted, “At the end of the LePage administration, aid to Bangor schools was $17 million. Now, it is $29 million per year. Four years ago, revenue sharing to the city of Bangor was $3.3 million. Today, it is almost $10 million,” showcasing the positive fiscal developments in the state.

Jackson emphasized that the misleading claims aim to deepen political divisions, making it easier for opposition parties to gain control of the State House. “I can guarantee you that these out-of-state money dark lies is only here to take over the Maine Senate, to take over the Maine House, and start giving money back to the wealthiest people in the state, in this country,” he stated.

Voters will have the opportunity to address the issue of out-of-state money in elections on Tuesday. Question 1 on the ballot proposes a cap of $5,000 on campaign contributions from super PACs that support or oppose political candidates and parties.
