A Pro-Palestinian protest at the Art Institute of Chicago turned chaotic as dozens of demonstrators were arrested on Saturday afternoon. The protest, which began with a small encampment set up by students from Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, quickly escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement.

The Chicago Police Department reported that at least 68 individuals were arrested and charged with criminal trespass to property. Video footage captured officers dismantling the encampment around 4:30 p.m., with some protesters being arrested while others were escorted away.

The protest, which included students and activists, aimed to raise awareness about the U.S. government’s support for Israel amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East. However, tensions flared when protesters allegedly surrounded and shoved a security officer, leading to clashes with law enforcement.

The Art Institute of Chicago stated that despite attempts to provide protesters with an alternate location, the situation escalated when protesters reportedly stole keys from a security officer, blocked emergency exits, and barricaded gates. Negotiations between the protesters and the institution were unsuccessful, leading to the intervention of the Chicago Police Department.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers negotiated with demonstrators for over two hours before the Art Institute requested enforcement action to remove those occupying the property. Demonstrators were given multiple warnings to disperse before arrests were made for criminal trespass to property.

The Art Institute emphasized its commitment to the safety of its staff, visitors, and collection, stating that protesters were offered an alternative location for their demonstration but refused to relocate.

Negotiations between the institution and student protesters, including promises of amnesty from academic sanctions and trespassing charges, ultimately failed to reach a resolution.

Meanwhile, similar protests continued at the University of Chicago for the sixth consecutive day, highlighting ongoing concerns about the situation in the Middle East and the role of the United States in the conflict.
