Democrat Sarah Corkery, running for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, emphasized the importance of women’s health care rights during her speech at the Des Moines Register’s Political Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair on August 13, 2024.

Corkery, a breast cancer survivor, stated that protecting legal access to abortion will be a key issue in the upcoming election. She argued that decisions about health care should be made by patients and their doctors, not the government.

I can’t imagine having to check with the government before discussing my treatment with my doctor, Corkery said. This is about power and control.

Corkery criticized Iowa’s law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, which took effect in July. She explained that many abortions later in pregnancy happen because of medical complications, and shared stories of women who needed abortions due to life-threatening ectopic pregnancies. Corkery also mentioned her own experience when her son almost died at 38 weeks of gestation, refuting claims that late-term elective abortions are common.

Corkery is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson in a race that she acknowledges will be tough. Despite raising significantly less money than Hinson, Corkery remains optimistic, especially after Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee following President Joe Biden’s exit from the race.

Corkery believes Harris’s nomination has energized Democrats, boosting enthusiasm and support for her campaign ahead of the November 5 election.
