This month, Santa Clara County is bringing back a program that gives people with non-violent misdemeanor warrants a chance to avoid jail time.

The program, called Operation Second Chance, lets eligible individuals turn themselves in at any law enforcement agency in the county. Instead of being arrested, they receive a citation with a new court date.

The program will run throughout December and has been successful in the past. From 2007 to 2017, over 3,500 people used Operation Second Chance to resolve their warrants without going to jail.

The program applies to most misdemeanor warrants, no matter the bail amount. However, it doesn’t cover felony warrants, warrants labeled No Cite and Release, or warrants related to violence, firearms, resisting arrest, or giving false information to an officer.
