The incident involving Rhode Island State Police troopers sharing a disturbing video of a fatal pedestrian crash has raised serious concerns about professional conduct and ethics within the department.
The video, which showed 21-year-old Alex Montesino being struck by a car while crossing Interstate 95, was reportedly shared on Snapchat by at least two troopers, accompanied by inappropriate commentary and laughter.
Montesino’s family, devastated by the insensitivity displayed in the video, emphasized the harm caused by the dehumanization of their loved one. His uncle, Frank Vidal, expressed the profound emotional toll, noting that Montesino’s twin sister had seen the video just before her brother’s funeral.
In response, the Rhode Island State Police initiated an investigation through their Professional Standards Unit. Lt. Col. Robert Creamer acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, stating that the actions of the involved troopers did not align with the values of the department.
The investigation has concluded, and disciplinary measures are being considered. The family, however, has called for the involved officers to be fired and to receive mental health support.
This incident underscores the need for law enforcement officers to uphold a high standard of professionalism and respect for the dignity of individuals, particularly in situations involving tragic loss.
