Republican senators, including Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, are facing backlash from their colleagues after skipping critical votes in the final days of the legislative session. The absences came during a period when Democrats were pushing to confirm judicial nominees ahead of losing their Senate majority in January.

Despite Republican efforts to delay the votes, the Democrats succeeded in confirming several nominees, including Embry Kidd to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Republican Senators, like North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, expressed frustration, emphasizing the importance of attending the sessions to prevent judicial nominees from being confirmed without opposition.

Tillis pointed out that Republicans had the opportunity to block some nominations if more senators had been present.

The absence of key figures, such as Vance and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, contributed to a narrow vote margin on several nominations. Other Republican senators, like Ted Cruz and Bill Hagerty, were also absent, opting to attend a SpaceX launch in Texas instead.

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy voiced his frustration over the missed opportunity, particularly concerning President Biden’s judicial nominees, whom he criticized for their perceived lack of qualifications.

In response to the criticism, Vance explained that he was meeting with President Trump about the nomination of an FBI director. However, after backtracking on his comments, he attended the Tuesday votes. Senator Shelley Moore Capito reiterated the importance of showing up for these votes to be effective in the final days of the session.
