Representative Sharon Steckman of Mason City has announced her retirement from the Iowa House of Representatives at the end of the current legislative session, concluding a 16-year tenure representing Mason City and its surrounding areas.

A Democrat, Steckman was re-elected in 2022 to represent House District 59 and served as Assistant Minority Leader during the latest session.

With a background in education, Steckman has prioritized public education throughout her career, serving as the ranking member on the House Education Committee.

She has voiced concerns about what she perceives as an attack on public education, attributing the challenges faced by Iowa’s educational system to the Republican supermajority in the state government.

There’s been an attack on public education, she stated, emphasizing the negative impact on the half a million students and dedicated teachers in Iowa.

Steckman expressed a commitment to bipartisan collaboration, saying, “My goal has always been to work in a bipartisan way.

She criticized the lack of compromise in recent years, suggesting that effective governance requires addressing the needs of all Iowans rather than allowing a supermajority to dominate decision-making.
