San Francisco, with its towering skyline and vibrant spirit, holds a cherished spot in the hearts of many. Soleil Ho, a cultural critic and former resident, recently made the poignant decision to bid farewell to the City by the Bay. Her departure, a mix of emotions, stemmed from both personal reflections and practical considerations.

Recalling her time in San Francisco, Ho fondly reminisces about the awe-inspiring vistas of the cityscape, whether viewed from the heights of Potrero Hill or amidst the winding streets of Lombard Street. She cherishes the leisurely strolls along Clement Street, the vibrant ambiance of Dolores Park, and the sense of camaraderie shared with fellow residents.

Yet, alongside these cherished memories, Ho candidly acknowledges the challenges that prompted her departure. The exorbitant cost of living in San Francisco, coupled with a yearning for new adventures, nudged her to explore alternative destinations.

In Berkeley, she discovered an unexpected charm and eccentricity that resonated deeply. From enigmatic street performers to late-night dining reminiscent of her native New York City, Berkeley offered a refreshing change of pace.

In Berkeley, Ho found herself immersed in a culture of curiosity and community engagement. Engaging in conversations with local residents, including UC Berkeley students, exposed her to diverse perspectives and narratives.

Despite bidding adieu to San Francisco, Ho remains tethered to the city, treasuring moments like composing this very reflection in the Chronicle’s office on Mission Street, with occasional glimpses of the familiar skyline during her commute.

Leaving San Francisco was a poignant decision for Ho, akin to parting ways with a cherished yet demanding companion. However, in Berkeley, she unearthed a new chapter brimming with intrigue and opportunity. As she embarks on this new journey, Ho acknowledges that her affection for San Francisco will endure, a sentiment that transcends physical distance.
