A man has been arrested following a violent carjacking attempt at a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru in Connecticut, where he allegedly punched a pregnant woman and bit a medic’s hand, police report.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when 28-year-old William Rodriguez pulled up to the drive-thru at 704 Foxon Road in East Haven around 7:44 p.m. He parked his vehicle in front of another car, where a woman was waiting at the drive-thru window. According to the East Haven Police Department, Rodriguez got out of his car, entered the victim’s vehicle through the passenger door, and demanded her keys. When she refused, he started punching her. The woman managed to escape and ran into the Dunkin’ Donuts for help.
A female employee at Dunkin’ Donuts saw the attack and quickly notified two male colleagues. The men rushed outside and confronted Rodriguez, who was attempting to drive off in the victim’s car.
They were able to pull him from the vehicle and hold him down until police arrived. When officers got to the scene, Rodriguez resisted arrest briefly but was taken into custody. While receiving medical care from a medic from the East Haven Fire Department, he bit the medic’s hand. Rodriguez was then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital under police guard before being taken to the East Haven Police Department for processing.
Investigators later discovered that the vehicle Rodriguez was driving, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, had been reported stolen from New Haven. The New Haven Police Department came to the scene to take custody of the vehicle for further investigation.
Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including breach of peace, assault on emergency medical personnel, third-degree robbery, second-degree reckless endangerment, assault on a pregnant person, third-degree assault, interfering with an officer, and two counts of motor vehicle larceny.
He is currently being held on a $250,000 bond and has several outstanding arrest warrants totaling $475,000. The East Haven Police Department praised the quick and brave actions of the Dunkin’ Donuts employees for their role in subduing Rodriguez. He is awaiting arraignment as the investigation continues.
