Planned Parenthood Great Rivers is set to close three clinics in eastern and southern Missouri next month while expanding telehealth services at its remaining locations. The affected clinics are the Florissant Health Center in North St. Louis County and the South Grand Health Center, both closing on November 1, followed by the Joplin clinic on January 1. No staff layoffs will occur due to these changes.

Interim president Richard Muniz emphasized that the closures aim to enhance patient care by transitioning services to other Planned Parenthood facilities and increasing virtual care access. The decision is described as data-driven, with many patients opting for clinics based on availability rather than proximity.

The closures occur against a backdrop of legislative changes in Missouri, including a new law cutting Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood. Muniz clarified that the consolidation is not a direct response to this law but a strategic move to ensure long-term sustainability amidst ongoing political challenges.

As part of the restructuring, remaining St. Louis area clinics will expand their services, including Title X family planning programs, and increase availability for various health needs. Transportation will be provided for Joplin patients needing to reach the Springfield clinic, as Planned Parenthood continues to serve approximately 9,000 Medicaid patients annually.

Looking ahead, the upcoming vote on Amendment 3, which seeks to enshrine abortion rights in the Missouri constitution, could influence future service offerings, though Muniz did not specify which clinics may resume abortion services if the amendment passes.
