Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign for re-election in 2024 spent tens of thousands of dollars on expensive hotels and limo services, federal records show. Between February 2023 and October 2024, her campaign spent over $56,000 on luxury hotels far outside her district and even in Washington, D.C. For example, in mid-March, her campaign paid $6,290 for a stay at the fancy Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In June and July, she spent over $7,000 on hotels in Milwaukee, including a $5,052 stay at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel. Her campaign also spent $859 at the Ritz-Carlton in Miami in October 2023.
In addition to hotels, Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign spent over $4,300 on limo services, including a $731 payment to a limo company in Utah. This was around the same time her team spent $1,512 on a stay at the luxury St. Regis Deer Valley resort in Park City.
Chavez-DeRemer’s re-election bid, however, was unsuccessful. She narrowly lost by under three points to Democrat Janelle Bynum on November 5.
Her spending has drawn criticism from some in her party. Republicans have also criticized her support for pro-union bills when she was in Congress, including the PRO Act, which aimed to weaken right-to-work laws and make it easier for workers to unionize. Chavez-DeRemer is known for her support of labor-friendly legislation and her backing of bills to help immigrants gain citizenship.
Some Republicans believe she was nominated for a cabinet position partly due to support from Teamster union president Sean O’Brien.
Recently, Chavez-DeRemer was among several of Trump’s cabinet appointees who received bomb threats, which she condemned as an “unacceptable way to express opposition.”
