TOLEDO, Ohio – American flags bought by the federal government will soon need to be fully produced and made in the United States. President Joe Biden is expected to sign a bill enforcing this new rule.
Previously, the government only had to buy flags with at least 50% American-made materials. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) introduced the All-American Flag Act. He believes it wasn’t the law earlier due to corporate interest groups moving jobs to China.
“There should never be an American flag flying over a military base or a government building that’s not entirely made by American workers,” Brown said. In 2017, Brown’s office reported that the U.S. imported 10 million American flags, with all but 50,000 coming from China.
Earlier this year, the Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill to prohibit state and local government agencies from buying U.S. or Ohio flags not made in the U.S. It is currently awaiting hearings in the Senate.
