COLUMBUS, Ohio WKEF – Nearly two dozen Democratic lawmakers in the Ohio House of Representatives are advocating for stricter regulations on gun purchases.
State Representative Willis Blackshear Jr. emphasized the importance of balancing Second Amendment rights with responsibility. We all respect the Second Amendment, but responsibility must come with it, he said.
Currently, 13 states in the U.S. have laws requiring a waiting period between buying and receiving a firearm. Ohio lawmakers aim to make Ohio the 14th state by introducing House Bill 309.
If passed, the bill would establish a 10-day waiting period for firearm purchases. During this time, federally licensed firearm dealers could conduct comprehensive background checks on buyers.
Blackshear explained, This gives time to check the database and determine if someone should or shouldn’t own a firearm. ‘Delay does not mean deny.
Blackshear and his Democratic colleagues view this bill as a meaningful step toward improving gun safety in Ohio. There’s more we can do, Blackshear noted, but this legislation is a positive step in the right direction to spark action.
