In an Ohio high school baseball game, a remarkable play left spectators in awe. Marion Local center fielder Griffin Burns made an extraordinary tag at home plate after an unexpected chase around the bases.
The unusual sequence began during district play when Fort Recovery batter Caden Grisez hit a popup into shallow center field. The ball landed in a spot where no fielder could reach it, allowing Grisez to hustle to second base with a stand-up double.
As the play developed, the Marion Local third baseman moved to cover second base but was too late. Seeing an opportunity, Grisez sprinted to third base and made it safely. In an attempt to prevent him from advancing, the catcher moved to cover third, leaving home plate unguarded. Grisez then aimed for an inside-the-park home run.
Meanwhile, Burns, who had retrieved the ball in the outfield, was determined to make the play. He chased Grisez down and caught up to him at home plate, tagging him out in a thrilling finish.
Despite the hustle, Marion Local was trailing 11-3 in the sixth inning (high school games are seven innings long). Grisez, despite being tagged out, had a standout game, going 3-for-4 and striking out seven batters in 5.1 innings. Fort Recovery secured the win and advanced to the Division 4 regional semifinals.
