The mayor of Newport Beach, Will O’Neill, has strongly criticized California’s sanctuary state policies, particularly SB 54, which limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. His comments follow a recent incident where 21 migrants were detained by the U.S. Coast Guard near the city’s shores.

O’Neill argues that these policies have encouraged illegal immigration, stating that individuals seeking to enter the U.S. are bypassing traditional border crossings, often arriving by boat. He also criticized state lawmakers for passing laws that he believes shield criminals in the country illegally.

O’Neill’s remarks point to a broader debate between California’s Democratic leadership and local leaders in more conservative areas. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office countered the mayor’s claims, suggesting that migrants prefer states like Texas and Florida over California due to their stricter immigration policies, and blamed Republicans for obstructing border security measures.

Newsom’s administration also emphasized that sanctuary laws include provisions allowing coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE for certain criminals.

The mayor’s criticism extends to broader issues he believes have worsened under Democratic leadership, such as rising crime and homelessness in Orange County. O’Neill’s comments are a response to what he sees as a disconnect between state lawmakers and local communities grappling with the consequences of such policies.

This exchange is part of the ongoing political tension surrounding immigration and public safety in California.
