New York to Revamp High School Graduation Requirements

The New York State Education Department has introduced a groundbreaking plan to overhaul high school graduation standards across the state. This proposal marks a departure from the traditional system by removing the requirement for students to pass Regents exams in order to receive their diplomas.

The decision to revise the graduation criteria comes following recommendations from a diverse panel consisting of students, parents, educators, researchers, and community leaders. The goal is to redefine the role and significance of a New York State diploma, with a focus on promoting equity within the public school system and ensuring that all students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for success in academics and beyond.

After extensive deliberation, the panel presented its findings in November 2023, laying the groundwork for the Education Department’s recent proposal. Education Commissioner Betty Rosa highlighted the collaborative nature of the plan, emphasizing the input received from stakeholders, particularly students and families.

Instead of relying solely on Regents exams, the Education Department’s plan introduces a new assessment framework called the “portrait of a graduate.” This framework aims to evaluate students based on their critical thinking abilities, problem-solving skills, literacy across various subjects, cultural and social-emotional competence, effective communication, and global citizenship.

Before finalizing the plan, the Education Department intends to conduct a series of public forums between July and October 2024 to gather feedback from the community on the proposed changes. Following this period of consultation, the department will present an implementation plan and timeline to the Board of Regents in November 2024 for approval.

This shift in graduation requirements represents a significant transformation in New York’s education landscape, signaling a commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students.
