The article describes a new effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom, led by the group SavingCalifornia.vote. The campaign, fueled by criticisms of Newsom’s handling of the recent wildfires in Southern California, accuses the governor of mismanagement that exacerbated the destructive LA County fires.

The group formally initiated the recall process by collecting the 50 co-sponsor signatures required to submit the petition to the California Secretary of State. If approved, the recall would proceed to a special election. This marks the latest in a series of attempts to recall Newsom, with the most notable being the 2021 election, which Newsom survived despite a challenge by conservative radio host Larry Elder.

Organizers argue that Newsom’s declining approval ratings, now reportedly in the low 20s, create a more favorable environment for a successful recall. They cite the wildfires, rising crime, and alleged leadership failures as key motivators for their efforts. Randy Economy, Chairman of Saving California, emphasized that the campaign is bipartisan and focused on the well-being of Californians rather than party politics.

James Bradley, a former Senate candidate and recall board member, echoed these sentiments, labeling Newsom’s policies as “draconian” and suggesting better measures could have been implemented to prevent the wildfires.

Newsom has defended his wildfire response amid mounting criticism, and his term is set to end in 2026. Due to term limits, he is ineligible to run for governor again.
