Last Sunday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico launched an initiative inviting Texas doctors to move to her state in response to Texas’s strict abortion ban.

The governor placed a full-page ad in five major Texas newspapers, directly appealing to healthcare providers. The ad included an open letter welcoming Texas doctors to practice in New Mexico without restrictions.

I understand the challenges you face due to Texas’s restrictive laws, especially those preventing you from providing comprehensive reproductive care, Lujan Grisham wrote. “While I respect those who stay in Texas, I invite those who find these restrictions intolerable to consider moving to New Mexico.

She assured that New Mexico will not follow Texas’s path in imposing such laws. I will always protect healthcare workers’ rights to care for their patients, she added. “Whether you’re a nurse, resident, physician assistant, or doctor, we warmly welcome you to New Mexico, where you can freely care for your patients.

Texas has one of the strictest abortion laws in the country, banning the procedure in almost all cases and allowing private citizens to sue those involved in abortions after about six weeks. Texas is among 22 states with harsh abortion laws, surpassing the standard set by Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in 2022.

Lujan Grisham’s letter is part of the Free to Provide campaign, which also placed six billboards around Houston in July, encouraging healthcare providers to come to New Mexico.

In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, stated, People and businesses are moving to Texas more than any other state. Governor Lujan Grisham should focus on her state’s declining population instead of political stunts.
