New Mexico Acequias Struggle with Climate Change and Reduced Federal Funding

The proposed legislation, particularly Senate Bill 208 and House Bill 330, could be pivotal in providing crucial support for these irrigation systems that are vital not only to New Mexico’s agricultural economy but also to its cultural heritage.

The funding would help maintain and restore these centuries-old irrigation systems, which many small farming communities rely on.

It’s also notable that the freeze on federal funding is creating a financial strain, especially for organizations like the New Mexico Acequia Association, which partners with the USDA.

With the additional strain from natural disasters like the Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak fire, it’s clear that more resources are urgently needed to preserve the state’s water infrastructure.
