These New Laws Will Take Effect in Michigan in 2024

As we welcome 2024 and say goodbye to 2023, Michigan is gearing up to enforce several new laws. Here’s a breakdown of the significant changes residents can anticipate:

1. Minimum Wage Boost

Starting January 1, 2024, Michigan’s minimum wage will rise from $10.10 to $10.33 per hour. Minors aged 16 and 17 will now earn $8.78 per hour, while tipped employees will receive $3.93 per hour.

2. Gun Law Amendments

Commencing on February 13, 2024, new laws regarding background checks, “red flags,” and a firearm ban for domestic violence offenders will come into effect. Michigan’s new Safe Storage Law will also mandate gun owners to secure their weapons.

3. Repeal of Right to Work Law

The repeal of Michigan’s Right to Work law will have lasting implications. This implies that employees in unionized workplaces can no longer choose to opt out of paying union dues.

4. Expansion of Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act

In 2024, the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act will be broadened to offer increased protections for the LGBTQ+ community, safeguarding them from discrimination in the workplace, public services, education, and housing.

5. Prevailing Wage Act

Commencing March 2024, the Prevailing Wage Act, applicable to state-funded construction projects, will mandate every contractor and subcontractor in Michigan to pay prevailing wage and benefit rates to employees working on most state-funded construction projects.

6. Voter Pre-Registration for Teens

A recent voting law permits residents as young as 16 years old to pre-register for elections. Young

drivers can now register to vote when obtaining their driver’s license, ensuring they are prepared to vote once they reach 18.
