New Hampshire Representative Annie Kuster, at 68 years old, is retiring from Congress, partly to set a better example for aging politicians. In an interview with The Boston Globe, Kuster expressed her hope that her decision will inspire others to step aside, particularly those who stay in office for too long, despite their continued success.

She also reflected on the challenges of aging in politics, citing President Joe Biden’s struggles with his age and the toll of the January 6 Capitol riot as key factors in her choice to leave.

Kuster stated that her decision was influenced by several factors, including her concerns about Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House and the recent political climate, which she described as increasingly difficult to navigate.

She criticized the role of billionaires like Elon Musk in shaping legislation, particularly regarding the bipartisan spending deal that nearly led to a government shutdown, calling their actions cold-hearted.

Her decision to retire, announced in March, was made before Trump’s election victory and Biden’s eventual decision to step aside, creating space for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Reflecting on her doubts about Biden’s ability to run for another term, Kuster noted that Biden’s age had become apparent during a meeting they had in New Hampshire, where his softer voice raised concerns about his readiness for the campaign.

Kuster’s retirement is a deeply personal decision shaped by her experiences, including the toll of the January 6 riot and the realization that it was time to make room for younger generations of political leaders. She described her retirement as an effort to set an example for others in her field.
