STOCKTON – Students at Lincoln Unified have returned to school, but with a new rule in place: a district-wide ban on cell phones for the school year.

Some parents support the ban, believing it will help students focus better in class. David Medina, who dropped off his twins at Lincoln High School, is pleased with the change. He thinks students should be more engaged in their studies and trusts the school staff to manage the policy. Medina also notes that students can use their phones after school.

However, not all parents are happy with the ban. Tamaya Buriss, whose freshman attends Lincoln High School, is concerned about safety. She feels that having a phone accessible is important given the current climate in Stockton and the world.

Lincoln Unified Superintendent Kelly Dextraze explains that the ban is intended to help in emergencies. According to first responders, it’s crucial to avoid students spreading potentially inaccurate information during a crisis.

Elementary and middle school students must keep their phones away all day, while high school students can access their phones during passing periods and lunch. Dextraze hopes the policy will reduce distractions, improve learning, and mitigate the negative effects of social media.

Parents who need to contact their child can call the school. Students caught breaking the rule three times may face detention or Saturday school.
