U.S. Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto have reintroduced the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act, aiming to prevent the storage of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

The bill ensures that local, tribal, and state officials have a say in decisions regarding nuclear waste repositories in their communities. It would require written consent from the governor, affected local governments, and tribes before proceeding with such projects.

The legislation follows recommendations from the Department of Energy’s 2012 Blue Ribbon Commission and 2017 consent-based siting report. Representatives Dina Titus, Steven Horsford, and Susie Lee introduced companion legislation in the House.

Senators and Representatives from Nevada, including Cortez Masto, Rosen, Titus, Horsford, and Lee, have long opposed the Yucca Mountain project, emphasizing that Nevada should not be forced to store nuclear waste due to its impact on public health and the environment.

The new bill is a continuation of efforts to safeguard Nevada from becoming a nuclear waste site.
